Patients who take the opioid tramadol are at greater risk for developing hypoglycemia — a condition caused by very low blood sugar — than those taking other pain medications, according to researchers at the University of California San Diego. Tramadol is currently ranked among the top five prescribed opioids in the United States. As tramadol use has grown, so have documented cases of adverse effects such as dizziness, nausea, headaches and constipation — all common side effects of opioids.
