U.S. News & World Reports ranks diets every year looking for the best diets for weight loss, heart health, healthy eating and many other criteria. The magazine utilizes a panel of health experts to asses 40 diets and to determine whether claims made for the diets were valid or not.

Their top two diets were the DASH Diet and the Mediterranean Diet. Both place their emphasis on plant foods along with some fish, chicken and other lean animal protein. Other key elements of the Mediterranean Diet are olive oil and a moderate amount of red wine.

The very popular Keto Diet scored at the bottom of the list. The Keto Diet advocates eating a lot of fat, over 70% of calories in some plans, and very few carbs. The Keto Diet puts your body into a state of ketosis and fat is burned for energy instead of carbohydrate.

There is an initial weight loss, but much of this will be water loss. There is also an initial loss of muscle mass because your body will  metabolize muscle as well as fat for energy. It is very difficult for most people to stay on the Keto Diet because the food choices are so restricted. It is not a sustainable diet.
