You Can’t Always Have What You Want

By | January 2, 2019

Did you know that you can just suddenly become lactose intolerant? You can and there is nothing you can do to reverse it. Turns out it is part of getting older for some people.

I will admit for several years I noticed a bloating and discomfort when eating dairy but never enough to make me stop consuming it. That was until this past September.

I immediately looked up my symptoms online to see what I was obviously dying from and all signs pointed to dairy. Hmm, I contemplated can I cut it out of my diet? I already didn’t drink milk and have never been a huge ice cream fan so I figured it would be easy.

I instantly noticed changes. I lost weight (apparently I had a lot of dairy bloat). My jeans fit better and I didn’t feel gross after everything I ate. This is great I thought to myself.

Then, after the first couple of weeks, I started to miss cheese. Like, I longed for it. I had fantasies of cheddar. I never realized how much cheese I ate until I had to give it up.

I live in a state known for cheese. People wear cheese wedges on their heads at sporting events and sometimes just because they want to. There are multiple festivals, races and other events celebrating the magnificence of cheese in this state.

Cheese is everywhere, you can’t escape it. It was a constant reminder of what I couldn’t have.

So I started experimenting. Oh, I’ll just eat a little bit and then tried to gradually up the amounts. Turns out I’m still lactose intolerant and consuming a lot of dairy makes me look 6 months pregnant.

I have come to realize sacrifices will have to be made if I want to feel better. I still use cheese in recipes for my family and give the kids string cheese in their lunch. I just make sure to not to put cheese or dairy in my portion.

I know there are over the counter medications you can take to help you digest dairy. You take it right when you start eating dairy. My problem is that I apparently ate dairy all day long! I do plan on picking some up next time I run to the store because sometimes you just have to have a milkshake or a piece of cheese.
