Big Sydney beach crowds moved on by cops

Hundreds of revellers defied Sydney’s lockdown to gather en masse at iconic beaches, forcing cops to disperse them and hand out breaches.

Shocking images have emerged of people congregating en masse at popular Sydney beaches on Friday night in blatant breach of Covid-19 rules as NSW’s Delta outbreak continues to rage.

Hundreds of people gathered at Bondi Beach but complied with directions when told by police to disperse, a spokeswoman told NCA NewsWire.

But it was a different story in Manly, where a number of move-on directions had to be issued along with three infringement notices for breaches of the public health order.

Police converged on the iconic eastern and northern coastal drawcards after receiving reports crowd numbers were increasing.

They were helped by local council rangers to patrol the areas and disperse the crowd, which left behind garbage including empty booze cans, bottles and packaging – outraging locals.

“The NSW Police Force remains committed to enforcing the public health order to limit the spread of the Covid-19 virus,” cops said in a statement.

“As part of Operation Stay at Home, operations will continue at Sydney beaches, parks and open recreational spaces across the weekend to ensure compliance with the current stay at home orders.”

Police were also out in force on popular Sydney beaches on Saturday, when the state recorded 1007 new locally acquired cases and 11 deaths.

Three people died in their homes, with their infections diagnosed after their deaths.

Sewage surveillance has detected fragments of the virus in samples from Tamworth in northeast NSW, Dareton and Balranald in far western NSW, Oberon in the central west, Dungog in the Hunter Region and Eden on the south coast – catchment areas where there have been no recent cases identified.
